Greenville is a city in, the county seat of, and the largest city of Hunt County. It was founded in 1846 and was named after Thomas Green, who significantly contributed to the founding of the Texas Republic and later became a member of the Texas Republic Congress. When a railroad was built in the 1880s, cotton flourished in the Blackland Prairie and the town was soon transformed, becoming the “cotton capital of the world.” To date, the city offers its museum, antique emporiums, and specialty shops. Its municipal auditorium featured concerts ranging from the Dallas Symphony Orchestra to Ray Wylie Hubbard. Elvis Presley also played there in 1955. As of 2018, its population was 28,263.
