Gregory is a city in San Patricio County. The community began when two companies, one of which is a rail line, partnered to build the town. It was named after Thomas Watt Gregory, an attorney general of the United States. In 1887, a post office was granted and the first settler arrived and bought a land a couple of years later. In 1909, Hotel Green was inaugurated. The hotel became known as one of the finest hotels on the coast as it costs the owner $55,000 to build the building. In addition, the hotel also became famous for its food. It accommodated the press corps that went with the U.S. President William Howard Taft when he visited that year. Gregory gradually became a trading center with three cotton gins, general stores, shops, and a bank. However, its growth slowed down when the hotel was moved to Taft in 1922. In 1944, the film Raggedy Man was set in Gregory. As of 2010, its population was 1,907.
