Groves is a city in Jefferson County and is part of the Beaumont-Port Arthur Metropolitan Statistical Area. It was the fourth largest city in the county. It was the home of Mary Karr, an award-winning poet and essayist; her memoir was based on her childhood days in Groves. Moreover, Groves was founded in 1916, when the Griffing brothers platted the community. It was originally known as Pecan Grove, but when it was taken over by the Port Arthur Land and Development Company, the name was changed to Groves, after Asa Groves, a resident of Port Arthur who supervised the development. In the 1980s, shipbuilding, refineries, and petrochemical plants were the city’s industries until shortly after, the oil prices tremendously dropped, allowing Groves to experience severe economic setbacks. As of 2010, its population was 16,144.
