Groveton is a city in and the county seat of Trinity County. It was established in 1881, when a railway company built a lumber mill and platted a townsite. The name Grovetown was proposed by the company director due to the blackjack trees between the mill and the town. Soon, the townsmen shortened it to Groveton. In 1882, a post office was awarded and the city was elected as the new county seat. Although the mill was the only industry in town, Groveton was incorporated in 1919. In the 1930s, a reforestation began in the area, along with the construction of a new county jail, a school, and a gymnasium. Once again, Groveton became a lumbering center, a portal to the national forest’s recreational site, a retail center for the county, and a point for small manufacturing. As of 2010, its population was 1,057.
