Gruver is a city in Hansford County. It was named after Joseph Gruver and his son, Lawrence, who established a ranch west of the region in 1907. The city then became a wheat and small-grain farming center, even before the arrival of the railroad in 1929. Two decades after the city’s establishment, a post office was inaugurated; in 1930, the city was incorporated. The greatest recorded tornado in history happened just west-southwest of Gruver in 1971; it wasn’t until 2004 when it was outdone. The hurricane was accompanied by close to two inches hailstorm which had significantly damaged the city’s wheat crops. Although the damages valued $15,000, it was minor and the town recovered shortly after. By the late 1980s, Gruver had thirty-seven businesses and almost 1,200 residents. As of 2010, its population was 1,162.
