Hallsville is a city in Harriston County. It is located on US 80, west of the county seat. It was first settled in 1839 when Fort Crawford was built nearby to protect its townsmen against the Indians. A decade after, the fort had a post office, along with a school, a church, and a Masonic Lodge that were all reported to be in the same building. In 1869, a railway crossed the fort and the residents soon moved to the railroad; a post office was inaugurated under the name of Hallville, after a railroad official. All that was left at the old site was a cemetery. Soon after, the town enjoyed the benefits of being on a railroad; East Texas envied Hallville. The community was incorporated in 1870 and the city became a boomtown. Cotton, wool, and hides were the economic mainstays. The post office changed the spelling of Hallville to Hallsville in the 1920s. As of 2010, its population was 3,577.
