Hamilton is a city in and the county seat of Hamilton County. It was first settled in 1855, when a store was built in the area. However, it wasn’t until 1858 that the city was founded and became the county seat. Hamilton was named after James Hamilton, the governor of South Carolina at the time. Three years later, a post office was inaugurated and by 1873, Hamilton only had 200 residents. The Civil War and the Indian attacks retarded the growth of the city. In 1899, a catastrophic flood hit the town and destroyed a lot of homes; it even drowned one resident. Another flood hit the town in 1954, causing millions of dollars in damages to the surrounding businesses. Hence, the town changed its farming patterns. To date, the city supports 100 businesses that included cloth manufacturing plants, wood and steel products, and dairy products. The city also addresses itself as the dove-hunting capital of the state that holds an Annual Dove Festival. It is also home to two famous artists: Mark Harelik and Louise Latham. As of 2010, its population was 3,095.
