Hargill is a census-designated place in Hidalgo County and is part of the McAllen-Edinburg-Mission Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located on FM 490 and FM 493, twenty-four miles northeast of McAllen. It was named after the combination of the name of its founders, W. A. Harding and Lamar Gill, who were also the ones who developed the area in the early 1900s. In 1924, a post office was awarded and a couple of years later, a railroad depot was built. By 1930, the community had ten stores, three churches, a school, and 400 residents. The town successfully surpassed the Great Depression and WWII since there were still nine stores under operation by 1947. The number of residents peaked at 1,349 by the year 1990 and 2000. As of 2010, its population was 877.
