Harrold is an unincorporated community in Wilbarger County. It is located at the junction of US 287, SH 240, FM 1763, and the Burlington Northern line. Harrold was formerly known as Cottonwood back in the early 1880s. Upon the arrival of a railroad in 1882, the community was renamed to Harrold, after Ephraim Harrold, a promoter who owned a nearby ranch. As a railroad depot, the community quickly became a boomtown. In 1885, the townsite was officially platted and a post office was soon inaugurated. Within a year, the population increased by 1,500, and Harrold became known as a sprinted frontier town, boosting numerous businesses that included sixteen saloons. Although its peak days stopped when the railroad reached Vernon, Harold remained to be a shipping point and an agricultural center, with 700 residents. After the second boom in the 1920s, when oil was discovered nearby, the number of residents decreased. From the year 1986 to 2000, its population was 320.
