Heidenheimer is an unincorporated community in Bell County and is part of the Killeen-Temple-Fort Hood Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located on the Atchinson, Topeka and Santa Fe rail line. It was founded in 1881, when the previously mentioned depot was built and a post office was soon opened. The community was named after S. Heidenheimer, the director of the railroad. The production and shipment of cotton, corn, and oats were the area’s major economic activities. Gins, hotel, saloon, lumber operation, and a newspaper were its primary businesses. The town’s population reached its pinnacle in 1925 with 250 residents, but it was halved within the next two decades. As of 2000, its population was 144.
