Hemphill is a city in and the county seat of Sabine County. It is located at the intersection of SH 87 and SH 184, southeast of central Sabine County. Hemphill was laid out in 1859, the year when it also received its post office. It was named after John Hemphill, the former justice of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Texas and of the State of Texas. Even though the town is in a central location surrounded by the Sabine National Forest and the Toledo Blend Reservoir, it did not benefit the town’s growth because the main transportation has never gone through the central portion. Back then, the only establishments they had were two churches, a district school, a gin, a mill, and a newspaper. Consequently, the number of residents didn’t grow as much. As of 2010, its population was 1,198.
