Hext is an unincorporated coterie located in Menard County in Texas. The Handbook of Texas states that the community’s population was just 73 at the 2000 census. The area was settled in the 1870s and was first known as Maringo (Marengo). Locals had a go in establishing a post office in 1895, but they found out that Maringo was already taken and had to choose another name. The name Hext was chosen to honor Joseph Robert “Bob” Hext who was one of the first settlers in the area. The post office was established two years after residents failed to establish it the first time. Hext’s public education system is being distributed by the Menard Independent School District.
