Irene is an unincorporated community situated in Hill County in Texas. The town lies on the junction of Farm to Market Road 308 and Farm to Market Road 1946. The community’s estimated population was 170 in the year 2000. The community used to be known as Zollicoffer’s Mill after Edwin Zollicoffer settled here in the late 1840s. The community was granted a post office in 1878 and is still operating. The railroad of the town arrived here in 1903. The town’s peak of population was 267 between the 1920s and the 1930s. The students of the area attend school in the nearby town of Bynum.
