Jayton is the county seat of Kent County in Texas. As of 2010 census, the population of the town was 534. The history of the city begins in the 1880s. The city was originally known as “Jay Flat”. It was settled 2 miles northeast of its current location. It was named after the native family. The town was given a post office in 1886. Daniel Jay was the coterie’s first postmaster. The town was renamed to what it is today in 1907. The town’s newspaper was established just one year later, the Jayton Herald. The population of the town never went over 750, but the community stood still when the Great Depression hit them.
