Kenney is an unincorporated coterie located in northern Austin County in Texas. State Highway 36 passes through the city. The area where Kenney is located was originally settled in 1820. But the coterie started sixty years later in 1880. A post office was built then. The town’s original name was Thompson after the town’s first postmaster. Four years later the name was changed to Kennyville in honor of an evangelist John Wesley Kenney. The name was shortened to what it is today in 1892. By 1904. The town’s population had gotten over 200, and it stayed like that (more or less) until now.
