La Joya is a city located in Hidalgo County in Texas. At the 2010 census, the town’s population was 3,985. The name translates to “The Jewel” in Spanish. The city was influenced by a small natural lake west to the city. The town was incorporated in 1965. As stated by the U.S Bureau, the town has a total area of 4.4 square miles. The town used to be called “Tabasco” next to the northern bank of Rio Grande. The community died out after floods and was rebuilt more to the north in an area that is less prone to floods.
