Lamesa is a city located in Dawson County in Texas. Lamesa is the county seat of Dawson County. At the 2010 census, the town’s population was 9,422. When Dawson County was first organized, the two candidates for the county seat were Lamesa and Stemmons. Lamesa just snatched that title with only five votes more. Lamesa was originally plated in July 1903. Most of the town’s source of income is based on cattle and cotton. The city also hosts an annual Chicken-Fried Steak Cook-off. The town’s nickname is “The Birthplace of chicken-fried steak.” The town has and is distributed by its own Independent School District.
