Marfa is the county seat of Presidio County and started in the early 1880 serving as a water stop along the railroad. The city lies between Big Bend National Park and Davis Mountains. The city was named after Marfa, which is Russian for Martha. A railway executive’s wife suggested the name. However, some historians argue that the name originated from a character in a novel written by Jules Verne. Marfa Army Airfield was an essential establishment for training pilots during World War II. Besides, the Army Airfield was used as a training ground for the Army’s chemical mortar battalions before its closure in 1945.
