The U.S. census-designated place of Matagorda is located near Colorado River's mouth in Matagorda County. The site was established in 1827 and is the third oldest town in Texas. Stephen F. Austin started Matagorda as a fortress for new settlers. Matagorda was one of the ports in Texas used during the Civil War by blockade runners. Oil and sulfur production boosted the growth of this area in the early 1920s. In 1942, Matagorda was hit by a hurricane that led to mass destruction of property. As a result, a levee was erected, which shielded the area from Carla Hurricane in 1961.
