The U.S. city of Mathis is located along the State Highway 359, close to Interstate Highway 37 in Patricio County. In 1887, Thomas H. Mathis planned this city when San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway passed this place. In 1890, a post office was established in this city. S. B Carnes served as the first postmaster. In 1913, the San Antonio, Uvalde, and Gulf Pacific Railway reached this city. Mathis thrived as a trading center, but in the early 1930s, vegetable production became the dominant economic activity. William Allison Guynes became the first mayor after this city was incorporated in 1939.
