The U.S. city of McAllen is found along the U.S. Highway 83 in Hidalgo County. The city was extensively rural in 1904, with agriculture being the main activity in the area. The North American Free Trade Association and Maquildora economy largely contributed to the development of cross trade with Mexico. The city was named after John McAllen, who gave land to the St. Louis, Brownsville, and Mexico Railway. The city applied for an incorporation charter in 1911. Later in 1916, the U.S. troops were stationed at this place to handle any disputes on the border due to the Mexican Civil War.
