McNeil is an unincorporated community on the north of Austin in Travis County. It was established at the intersection of the Austin and Northwestern Railroad and the International and Great Northern railroad. The two rails were constructed in 1882 and 1876, respectively. The International-Great Northern Railway was built to link Austin and Rockdale, and the Austin and Northwestern Railway was constructed from Austin to Burnet. The community is named after George McNeill. McNeil operated as a foreman on a section of railway between Austin and Rockdale. In 1888, a post office was established in this area with Adison A. Shepperd serving as the postmaster.
