Memphis City is Hall County’s county seat where it is also located. The 2010 census reported the area’s population as 2,290. It stands at the junction of Farm Road 1547, State Highway 256, and US Highway 287. The town was founded in 1889 by J. C. Montgomery when he purchased land for a townsite. The land’s previous owner was W. H. Robertson who owned dugout nearby. Together, Robertson, Montgomery, T. J. Woods, and J. W. Brice formed a townsite company that presented the town’s plat in 1890. Later that year, a post office was opened here with Robertson as its postmaster.
