The town’s settlement began in the late 1860s or the early 1870s. Dr. O. Murcheson was the town’s establisher. He named the community for Judge Merit. The town received a post office in 1884. The tracks of the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway reached the community. The town’s population was at its peak in the 1920s But has since then diminished and is 215 residents as of the year 2000. Merit is an unincorporated coterie, and even though it is unincorporated the post office still operates the town. Merit’s public education system is being provided by the Bland Independent School District.
