The establishment of Merkel started in around 1870 when the Texas and Pacific Railway was built. The town was first known as Windmill Town in 1881. Then, it was renamed Merkel to honor the first settler of the area known as S.M. Merkel, who was a German immigrant. In 1882, a general store was opened, and just one year later a post office was established. Merkel is a city located in Taylor County in Texas. As of the 2010 census, the town has a population of 2,590 people. Merkel’s public education system is being provided by the Merkel Independent School District.
