The first settlers of the site that is now Mertens arrived in the late 1880s. St. Louis Southwestern Railway was being built during this time. Mertens’ name came from the engineer’s first wife of the first train that passed this area. The post office of the town opened in 1888, and four years after that, a bank was established as well. The town gained its incorporation in 1914. Mertens is situated in Hill County in Texas. As of the 2010 census, the town’s population was 125. The public education system of the town is being distributed by the Frost Independent School District.
