The town of Mertzon was originally named for M.L. Mertz who was a director of the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railway. The town’s post office opened in 1908. Mertzon gained its incorporation in 1933. Three years later Mertzon and Sherwood were contesting for the county seat of Irion County. Mertzon was elected the county seat. As of the 2010 census, the town’s population was 781. The town’s total area is 1.5 square miles according to the U.S Bureau. The city is served by the Irion Independent School District. The city itself is part of the San Angelo Statistical Area.
