Midkiff was founded in an oil boom in the early 1950s. The town was originally applied for a post office with the name Hadacol, but it was rejected as it is well-known cough syrup. The town was named after a former coterie in nearby areas of Midland County. That former community was named after a local rancher named John Rufus Midkiff. The community’s post office was established in 1952. The town’s population peaked in the 1990s with 329 residents and has since then declined to around 230 people. Midkiff is an unincorporated community and is located in Upton County in Texas.
