The settlement of Mission is connected to the community of La Lomita. A railway was being built and was passing through La Lomita in 1904. It was decided that the railway will go further south of the community and form a community there by the name of Mission. The railway to Mission was completed in 1907 which meant that the town had an influx of newcomers. The town’s name was chosen in 1908 when the community applied for a post office. The city itself is located in Hidalgo County and has a total population of 77,058 as of the 2010 census.
