Located in northern Lubbock County, the town of New Deal sprang up in 1909 when the railway track began. The area was originally named Monroe for Monroe G. Abernathy, a railroad promoter. In 1949, the name had been changed to New Deal because of the consolidated school district of Caldwell, Center, Grovesville and Monroe under Franklin Roosevelt’s Depression-era programs. The town was originally developed as a train station loading site. But the economy slowly changed into businesses which includes gins, onion-packing sheds, grocery stores, and a café. The regional headquarters for Northrup King Seed Company was also located there.
