New London is located 122 miles southeast of Dallas in Rusk County. It was established as a result of the southern frontier in 1855. From 1855 to 1930 the community depended a lot on agriculture. These products were shipped from the community depot, known as Norfolk. The first well drilled in the East Texas oilfield just a few miles from the area made it a boomtown in 1930. The name changed from London to New London when the people found out there was a London in Kimble County. On March 18, 1937, a natural gas leak caused an explosion that killed many. This was recognized as the third deadliest disaster in Texas.
