Started in July 1895, New Summerville is found in northeast Cherokee County. The site was settled by homesteader and was called Union Chapel. Caley Amos Summers donated land for a public school which signified the beginning of the town. The town was named New Summerfield for its location in Summer’s field. New Summerfield grew rapidly because the crossroads led to towns where farm products could be marketed. By 1925, plant farms were a major industry. In 1988, greenhouses, Christmas tree farms and ranches were the main economic activity. In 1912, the New Summerfield Independent School District was considered the best in the county.
