First settled in the mid-1850s, Newark is located in the extreme southeast of Wise County. The first settlers referred to the community as Caddo Village because of numerous remnants of the Caddo Indian culture found along the banks of the West Fork of the Trinity River. It was later called Odessa and many other names but was named after Newark in remembrance of the hometown of G. K. Foster, the civil engineer who helped survey the town. The town had made a name for itself as a retail market for area farmers by end of 1940s. According to the 2018 census, the population is estimated to be 1,203.
