Elected as the county seat of Newton County since 1853, Newton is located in the north-central section of the county. The town was named in honor of John Newton, an American Revolutionary War veteran. In 1906 the railway was completed which led to local developments in lumber-related industries. After the Great Depression and World War II, the local economy changed to agriculture, ranching, and hog raising. The discovery of oil also influenced the economy. Incorporation happened in 1935. The Newton area has some of the best specimens of pyramid magnolia and bluejacks oak in the United States.
