Nocona is in north central Montague County. It was to be named after Jordan but instead it was named after the Comanche Chief Peta Nocona. In 1887 postal service began. On July 30, 1891, residents voted to incorporate. Oil-equipment companies, clothing factories, and the success of Nocona Boots contributed to a growing economy. Nocona today continues many of the heritage traditions of leather goods it developed from the Chisholm Trail including the Cavenders' "Larry Mahan" signature cowboy boots and later the Nocona baseball glove. The newly opened Tales 'n' Trails Museum continues to develop the diverse historical highlights of the region.
