Located on Farm Road 383 in west-central Runnels County, Norton is a small unincorporated community that has an estimated population of 76 in 2000. It was founded in 1903 and named after George W. Norton, a businessman from Kentucky, who also owned the townsite. 1901 was the year houses began dominating it and a post office that was opened in 1894 was moved in 1902. The community's first store was also established in 1901 by Robert Turner. A cyclone in 1912 destroyed buildings that also left one casualty. 1923 to 1930 saw the proliferation of business that includes a gin and a bank. A fire in 1929 caused severe damages then, in 1968, its Norton High School was devastated by a fire and their students were scattered among its neighbors, Ballinger, Bronte, and Winters school districts. Although, remnants of the original school still stand serving as its community center. Also, there was a time that four different churches existed in the area, including a Baptist, a Methodist, a Church of Christ, and a Presbyterian church.
