Notrees is an unincorporated community located on State Highway 302, about 20 miles northwest of Odessa in west-central Ector County, Texas. It has a population of 23 based on the 2010 U.S. Census. It was developed in the 1940s when large oil fields were discovered that includes the TXL oilfield of the Permian Basin. Former names include Caprock and Strawberry. It used to house the world's largest grid energy storage system using a 36 MW (48,000 hp) lead-acid battery capable of delivering full effect for 40 minutes. Through the efforts of Charles E. Brown, a local merchant, a post office was built in his drug store and aptly named it Notrees as a response the U.S. Post Officer requirement for a title suitable for the locality. Historically, the place had one native tree before construction of a large Shell Oil Company "gas plant" forced its removal.
