Odessa, founded in 1881, has a nickname of Jackrabbit Capital of Texas or Jackrabbit-Roping Capital of Texas. The city was named after Odessa, Ukraine, due to the local shortgrass prairie's similarity to Ukraine's steppe landscape. Situated above the Permian Basin and also located along the southwestern edge of the Llano Estacado in West Texas. Also, a small section of the city extends into Midland County. Odessa became the county seat of Ector County, Texas in 1891. It was established as a water stop and cattle-shipping point on the Texas and Pacific Railway and incorporated as a city in 1927 after the discovery of oil in Ector County on the Connell Ranch southwest of Odessa. With a total area of 44.0 square miles, it has reached a population of 116,861 in 2017. The city has a council-manager government, with a city council of five councilors (elected from geographic districts) and a mayor (elected at-large). Odessa-Schlemeyer Field Airport (ODO), Bates Field Airport (71TA), and Medical Center Hospital Heliport (32XA) are the airports and heliports here.
