Olney is said to be named after Grover Cleveland's Secretary of State or some incident of local interest that occurred at Olney, Illinois. With a total area of 2.0 square miles, it is located in north-central Texas, specifically, one-hundred miles west of Fort Worth, forty miles south of Wichita Falls, two-hundred miles east of Lubbock and ninety miles northeast of Abilene. A settlement existed around 1880 with local ranchers celebrating their annual round-up. Two acres of land were donated in 1889 that soon became the townsite and a post office was also established. A school was opened in 1891 and the Wichita Falls and Southern Railway arrived in 1909 which prompted the community to change its location one mile north. Then, Olney became a two railroad town with the arrival of the Gulf, Texas and Western railroad in 1910. With a total area of 2.05 square miles, the city reached a population of 3,102 in 2017. Olney is also the home of the One-Arm Dove Hunt. There is also a public swimming pool at the Tom L. Griffin Park. Olney Municipal Airport (ONY) which has 3 Runways is the airport in the city.
