Paint Rock had been named as such because of the numerous Indian pictographs painted on cliffs overlooking the nearby Concho River which actually cover nearly half a mile upstream from the town of Paint Rock. This town is the county seat of Concho County, Texas. The original location was a half-mile west of the present location and in 1879, the mistake was found and the first buildings relocated to the present site including their post office. With a total area of 1.64 square miles, its present location is in the north-central part of the county at the junction of Ranch Road 380 and U.S. Highway 83, about twenty-one miles northeast of Eden. By 1884 it had become a shipping center for wool, hides, pecans, and mutton. It wasn’t until 1910 that a railroad was constructed and by 1914, the community had its own water system and newspaper. Fannie Elizabeth Ratchford, a noted literary scholar, was born in Paint Rock in the 1880s. Also, the town's population is 293 in 2017.
