Pawnee is situated in northwestern Bee County and the Texas State Highway 72 runs through the community, leading northeast 15 miles (24 km) to Kenedy and southwest 14 miles (23 km) to Interstate 37 near Three Rivers. Its name was said to originated from a board with the inscription "Pawnee" that someone had nailed to a tree. Despite being a small census-designated place (CDP) with a total area of 5.3 square miles, it has Church of Christ, Methodist, Swedish Lutheran, Baptist, German Lutheran, Catholic, and Pentecostal churches. Oil was discovered in 1930. Its population was 166 in 2010. Pawnee is known for its excellent dove, quail, and white tail deer hunting and it also has on airport, San Christoval Ranch Airport (XS71) (Runways: 1).
