Pendleton was formerly known as Pendletonville which is located a quarter-mile south of the site of present Pendleton which is on the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway and Farm Road 1237, six miles northwest of Temple in northern Bell County. The community evolved around the railroad station in the early 1880s. They also established the Pendletonville School which was considered the second-largest district school in the county in 1903, when it served 151 pupils. In 1908, the name was changed for a local merchant and politician and a future lieutenant governor of Texas, George C. Pendleton. This unincorporated community has a post office with the ZIP code of 76564. They are also part of the Killeen–Temple–Fort Hood Metropolitan Statistical Area. Pendleton was also the birthplace of acclaimed blues musician Blind Willie Johnson. They reached a population of 60 in 2000.
