Pipe Creek was named and founded after the local creek of the same name, Pipe Creek, about 1870 and the first resident was Francis Marion Hodges who settled around 1868. Mrs. Marion Hodges opened the first store during the 1870s. A post office was opened in 1873. Oliver S. Shirley is another settler who arrived in 1870. Also, during the first decade, about seventy families moved into the area. Early families included the Scotts, Andersons, Newcomers, Vawters, and Morgensterns. By 1880, it became a stage stop between San Antonio and Bandera. In 1908, the first telephone line was installed (in the general store). Situated on State Highway 16 about nine miles east of Bandera in eastern Bandera County, this an unincorporated community reached a population of approximately 66 in 1990. It is also part of the San Antonio Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Bandera Independent School District serves area students.
