Ponder was originally called Gerald and had its first settlers by the 1850s when a gristmill was established by one Silas Christal. The railroad arrived in 1886 who called the community Gerald but it was later changed in 1889 because the name was already in use and Ponder was chosen in honor of W. A. Ponder, a prosperous landowner, and Denton banker. Ponder received a post office in 1893 with C. N. Skaggs as a postmaster in his general store. This town in Denton County, Texas, has a total area of 3.2 square miles. The population was 1,395 at the 2010 census. Also, Ponder is served by the Ponder Independent School District and Little Lions Learning Center as well as Lil Einsteins Academy. Airports and other landing facilities located in Ponder include Deussen Field Airport (45TE) (Runways: 1), Roma Airport (74T) (Runways: 1), and Ponderosa Field Ultralight (XA10). Joe McQueen (1919–2019), the jazz musician, was also born in Ponder.
