Port Aransas is a resort and fishing community on Mustang Island in extreme northeastern Nueces County. The settlement began as sheep and cattle grazing stations established in 1850. It was formerly known as Ropesville and as Tarpon but was changed to Port Aransas in April 1911. Since World War II, the area has become a tourist attraction with its public beach and attractive activities. The total population as of 2010 is 3,480 but the population can swell during tourist season and traffic rivals that of larger Gulf Coast cities. Every year in April Port Aransas hosts an event called Sand Fest.
