Port Isabel is a city in Cameron County that can be found in the southernmost region of the U.S. state of Texas. The area was first discovered as early as the 17th century, when water sellers traveled to the nearby Brazos Santiago Island to get some water. The area became a summer resort in 1800 and a small community was established around the 1830s. And although the settlement was renamed multiple times before it was incorporated in 1928 and its name was finally officialized as Port Isabel in 1930, the area has been consistently developing since the beginning of time. The harbor, town, and the $7000 lighthouse were all being fought over during the Civil War. It also held the first annual Texas International Fishing Tournament in 1934 and one year later, Port Isabel became a famous seaport. And even though Hurricane Beulah destroyed much of the city in 1967, Port Isabel managed to stay. Perhaps it was due to the fact that Port Isabel leads in the shrimping and fishing industry and it is home to recreational activities like fishing, hunting, and boating. As of 2010, it has a population of 5,006.
