Formerly known as Lavaca, the town changed its name to Port Lavaca in 1887 when the railroad was constructed. The town came to after the Comanchee raid in 1840 which was called then Linnville Raid of 1840. The area was envisioned as a shipping point for exporting raw materials and importing manufactured goods. It soon became the busiest port on the adjoining Matagorda and Lavaca bays. Annual celebrations include Fishing Festival, the Taste of Heritage festival, the county fair, and the Festival of Lights. First held in 1963, Port Lavaca was the terminal point of the Texas Water Safari, a paddle race that begins in San Marcos.
