Port O’Connor is located in southern Calhoun County. Farmers in the area raised figs and citrus fruit and shipped theirs produces to the town’s Fig Orchards Company for processing. When the railroad was built in 1909, the people turned the town into a summer resort. In 1961, Hurricane Carla completely leveled downtown Port O’Connor. Eight years later the town’s population increased due to employment opportunities at the nearby Matagorda Air Force Base. Situated on Matagorda Island lies the Matagorda Island State Park which ferries passengers from the dock in Port O’Connor. Texas Blue Water Fishing provides a variety of charters for tourists to go out to sea.
