Porter, Texas in southeastern Montgomery County. It was founded in the late 1800s. Porter was elected as the county seat from 1896 to 1915. A post office was established in 1892. The major source of revenue was lumbering and livestock breeding. In the 1960s the town was apparently brought into the suburban orbit of Houston. The Porter schools had been incorporated into the New Caney Independent School District by 1965. Robert L. Crippen, United States Navy was Porter’s most famous resident. He became a National Aeronautics and Space Administration astronaut in 1969 and was pilot for the space shuttle Columbia in 1981.
