Pottsville is located on Cowhouse Creek in western Hamilton County. Its name came from Captain John S. Potts, an early settler and sheep raiser who arrived in 1872. He founded the town five years after his arrival. The land on which the town was built on was donated by Edmund T. Goggin who stipulated that no alcohol would be sold. During 1914 and 1922 a fire broke through on the south side of the town square. 22 years later, a tornado occurred. The post office and school closed down and in July 1989 the Pottsville ISD merged into the Hamilton district.
